The Effect of Exclusive Breastfeeding on Infant Morbidity in Guinea Conakry

Infant morbidity caused by infectious diseases is prevalent in Guinea. However, a study shows that exclusive breastfeeding significantly protected the infants against many of the studied morbidities (OR: 0.28, CI: 0.15-0.51) and specifically against diarrhea (OR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.17 – 0.86), respiratory infections (OR: 0.27; 95% CI: 0.14 – 0.50), and low growth rate (OR: 0.11; 95% CI: 0.02 – 0.46), but not for otitis, urinary infection, or meningitis. This is to suggest that public health officials should encourage breastfeeding in order to reduce incidence of those diseases.

Full Planet, Empty Plates: The New Geopolitics of Food Scarcity

Chapter 4. Food or Fuel?

by Lester R. Brown

At the time of the Arab oil export embargo in the 1970s, the importing countries were beginning to ask themselves if there were alternatives to oil. In a number of countries, particularly the United States, several in Europe, and Brazil, the idea of growing crops to produce fuel for cars was appealing. The modern biofuels industry was launched. 1

This was the beginning of what would become one of the great tragedies of history.

Climate Analog and Map Resources

To examine climate commonalities across the globe is called climate analog.  This is an extremely helpful tool in design work that I have used several times now that I have explored many of the world’s climates. For example, being able to grow Avocados next to Apples is possible and I have seen it at several places including coastal influenced places in New Zealand and Portugal.

Yet the amazing science of Mexico City’s real estate development obeys no such laws.

Urban planners here, in one of the world’s most populous and crowded cities, have found a way to add thousands of square feet of new commercial and recreational space.
