MADRID — The Spanish auxiliary nurse who was the first person known to have contracted the Ebola virus outside of Africa was declared cured of the disease on Tuesday, after a second test for the virus in recent days came back negative, according to officials at the hospital where she has been treated since Oct. 7.

The nurse, María Teresa Romero Ramos, 44, was found to be infected after she treated a Spanish missionary at the Carlos III hospital in Madrid who had returned from West Africa with the disease; he died Sept. 25. Ms. Romero and officials at the hospital have suggested that she may have become infected by touching her face with a glove while removing protective gear.

At the Carlos III hospital, Ms. Romero was treated with blood plasma taken from people who had survived Ebola infections, and with an experimental drug as well, officials said, but specific details about her treatment have not been released.

NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL                                                 Oct. 22, 2014

Americans who are worried about the risk of an Ebola outbreak in this country can take heart from two recent successes. In Texas, 43 people who were being monitored because they had had direct or indirect contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian who died of Ebola in a Dallas hospital, were found clear of the Ebola virus on Monday.

Also that day, the World Health Organization declared Nigeria free of Ebola. The Nigerian health authorities were able to snuff out a small outbreak that could have spread through the crowded slums of Lagos, a city with 21 million people, and beyond.

In Dallas, the 43 people being monitored emerged from the 21-day incubation period for the virus without a single one becoming sick. That includes Mr. Duncan’s fiancée, who cared for him when he was sick, and three other family members in the same apartment; all four stayed in the apartment for several days with contaminated towels and bedding that had not been sanitized.

Dallas nurse Amber Vinson is free of the Ebola virus and will be transferred from isolation at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, her family said Wednesday.

The family also said that the 29-year-old nurse, who contracted the virus from Liberian Thomas Eric Duncan, was regaining strength and that her spirits were high.

"We are overjoyed to announce that, as of yesterday evening, officials at Emory University Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control (and Prevention) are no longer able to detect virus in her body," the family said in a statement hours after Vinson spoke with her mother, Debra Berry.

She said her daughter, a nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian, has been cleared for transfer from isolation at Emory. She remains under treatment at the hospital's unit for serious communicable diseases. ...The statement did not indicate when she might be released.
