Strengthening Disaster Prevention and Resilience: Developing Media and NGO Capacity to Increase Awareness among Communities in the Indian States of West Bengal and Orissa – India

This British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Trust (WST) initiative is shaped by the observation that the media, governments, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have a crucial role to play in raising awareness amongst the public about risk management. Launched in December 2007 in India, the 15-month pilot project centres around a series of 5-day training workshops for print and broadcast journalists and NGO representatives. The Trust hopes to enable interaction between these groups that might spark the development of fruitful relationships. In addition, shorter workshops for government officials in each state focus on how to cooperate with the media more effectively. Finally, a 3-day workshop for local radio professionals explores the design and production of public service announcements (PSAs) on disaster preparedness.

It would be nice to see an extension of this work in India to the web, including work on blogs, interactive stories, forums, work groups, wikis, and intelligent social networks.

commercial aircraft. I wonder how much suffering and death might have been prevented in Phuket, Thailand, if tourists flying into Thais international airports, had watched an interesting and informative video about tsunamis. What difference the next major California earthquake might be, if all flying into California watched 5 minute videos directed at DRR. What if all flying into hurricane/typhoon prone areas, watched a short on preparing for and surviving these? Something about a captive audience at 30,000 feet, speaks potential to me.
