The typhoon that tore through the Philippines on Friday threw the country into such turmoil that, days later, public officials are reporting wildly different death tolls. The government disaster relief agency announced 229 killed, the army reported 942 and local officials in the devastated provence of Leyte went as high as 10,000. But none are much more than estimates, given that emergency workers still can't reach some of the worst-affected areas.

submitted by Ian Perrin

chathamhouse.org - by Jon Liden - June 4, 2013

The UN’s recently published report to help the world set targets for 2030, succeeding the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that run up to 2015, presents an optimistic yet sober vision. Building on the MDGs and retaining a focus on the world's poorest and most vulnerable, it has expanded the scope of the proposed goals to include a comprehensive blueprint for how to create a sustainable, more peaceful and equitable world. It has based its agenda on what we can all agree on without skirting the difficult challenges the world is facing.

Tomgram: Michael Klare, The Coming Global Explosion

tomdispatch.com - by Michael Klare - April 21, 2013

In his pathbreaking 2001 book Resource Wars, Michael Klare wrote: “Natural resources are the building blocks of civilization and an essential requirement of daily existence.  The inhabitants of planet Earth have been blessed with a vast supply of most basic materials.  But we are placing increased pressure on those supplies, and in some cases we face, in our lifetimes, or those of our children, the prospect of severe resource depletion.”
