ANALYSIS - The spread of African Swine Fever from the Caucasus to the east coast of the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine presents an alarming and concerning situation, writes Chris Harris.

The latest outbreak, discovered at the end of July and confirmed through PCR tests on samples taken from back yard pigs in the Zaporozhye region, is worrying because it represents not so much a gradual spread of the disease, but a dramatic jump.

The outbreak has occurred 170 kilometres from the Russian border.

OIE - African Swine Fever - Russia

Ukraine submitted to the OIE its immediate notification on the 1st
outbreak in Zaporozh'ye on 31 Aug 2012; weekly follow-up reports are
anticipated.
 
Russia has duly submitted its follow-up report No 91 on 10 Aug 2012.
It includes the details of 11 new outbreaks, of which 10 in farmed
domestic swine in the oblasts Krasnodar (7) and Volgograd  (3), and a
single infected wild boar recorded distant, north-west to the said
outbreaks, in the oblast Novgorod. On the 10 farms there were 74 380
susceptible animals, with 2064 clinical cases of which 551 died; 73
829 pigs have reportedly been culled. See, with an interactive map, at
