> This month, the 10 interdisciplinary design teams revealed their preliminary research findings <https://rebuildbydesign.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=edb8f5540abe67b919bc1e15f&id=65a4fd31d4&e=8e2b11ff2c> for the Resilient by Design Bay Area Challenge <https://rebuildbydesign.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=edb8f5540abe67b919bc1e15f&id=6d201f0a81&e=8e2b11ff2c>. The resulting proposals focused on a host of resilience challenges ranging from fluvial flooding to the daily challenges of inequity to housing and transportation. Based on public feedback, the Research Advisory Committee <https://rebuildbydesign.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=edb8f5540abe67b919bc1e15f&id=a02baf286a&e=8e2b11ff2c> will pair each team with one of their proposals in early December. They will then proceed to the Design Stage. Learn more>> <https://rebuildbydesign.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=edb8f5540abe67b919bc1e15f&id=cec24d4b2f&e=8e2b11ff2c>

> Lower Manhattan Project Unveils Preferred Footprint
> The Project Team for the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency (LMCR) project met with the Community Board 3 LMCR Task Force to discuss moving the alignment of the project footprint closer to the Esplanade and under the FDR drive. This decision was based on criteria including number of residents and assets protected, ability to meet project deadlines, subsurface conditions, and public benefit opportunities. The team also presented their initial review of a variety of deployable technologies (rolling gates, swing gates, flip-up barriers, and deployable fabric barriers) that may be utilized as part of the alignment. The presentation is available here <https://rebuildbydesign.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=edb8f5540abe67b919bc1e15f&id=70c17da4f8&e=8e2b11ff2c>.
> East Side Coastal Resiliency Project Presents Design Changes
> This month, the Project Team for the East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) presented <https://rebuildbydesign.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=edb8f5540abe67b919bc1e15f&id=744c661d56&e=8e2b11ff2c> to Community Boards 3 and 6 the proposed design changes for flood-risk reduction north of Montgomery Street. Among the proposed changes is a plan to connect the proposed flood barrier to the VA Hospital's new inland floodwall at 24th Street instead of 25th Street. The earlier plan to collect and temporarily store excess stormwater in a large underground tank has been replaced with a plan to collect water in large underground pipes that are less disruptive and more cost-effective. > Long Island Projects Move Through Design to Permitting
> The design for the restoration of Hempstead Lake State Park’s dam, spillway, and related infrastructure to mitigate flooding at the headwaters of Mill River has reached 90% design. The Project Team has begun designs for three other components: dredging Smith Pond in Rockville Centre to increase stormwater capacity; protecting East Rockaway High School with bulkhead improvements; and constructing a series of paths with bioswales along the river. > Bridgeport Project Formalizes Citizen Engagement, Technical Advice
> Bridgeport's Project Team formalized community engagement this month by creating a Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) of more than 40 individuals representing a diverse cross section of the city. The CAC includes elected officials, representatives from religious and cultural institutions, small business owners, and neighborhood association leaders. The Project Team also created a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) composed of two dozen City and State agencies whose experience and expertise range from constructability to operations and maintenance. Consultation with both groups will be critical as environmental review proceeds for the pilot project, which includes a stormwater park and raised street adjacent to a redevelopment project in the South End.
