WHO Urges Stronger Regulations on Vaccines in China

WHO Urges Stronger Regulations on Vaccines in China

BEIJING—

China needs to more closely regulate the market for private vaccines within its borders, the World Health Organization said Tuesday after authorities broke up a massive illegal drug ring earlier this month.

Police in China arrested more than 130 people allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade after the group dumped around $48 million worth of illegal vaccines onto the private Chinese drug market. Much of the medicine had expired before it was sold.

“This incident has highlighted the need for more, stricter enforcement of vaccine management regulations across the board,” WHO China representative Bernhard Schwartlander said in an email.

According to Chinese police, a woman and her daughter, who have since been arrested, led the drug ring and sold more than $100 million worth of illegal vaccines across the country since 2001.

Private sellers

All told, 29 pharmaceutical companies are believed to have sold the illegitimate drugs to 16 institutions.

The Most Efficient Health Care Systems In The World

Huffington Post - Kavitha A. Davidson - August 29, 2013

As supporters and opponents of the Affordable Care Act debate the best way to overhaul a clearly broken health care system, it's perhaps helpful to put American medicine in a global perspective.

The infographic below is based on a recent Bloomberg ranking of the most efficient countries for health care, and highlights enormous gap between the soaring cost of treatment in the U.S. and its quality and effectiveness.

Subject: [DISASTR-OUTREACH-LIB ] Hospital Librarians Survey - Emergency/Disaster Involvement

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Amy Donahue To: ***@***.*** Sent: Wednesday, February 15, 2012 3:10 PM Subject: [DISASTR-OUTREACH-LIB ] Hospital Librarians Survey - Emergency/Disaster Involvement Please forgive the cross-posting! But do feel free to forward this on to your hospital librarian colleagues through state or regional lists (I've got Wisconsin covered) - I would very much appreciate it as I'm trying to reach as many hospital librarians as humanly possible. The objective of this survey is to look at whether hospital librarians are actively involved in their organizations' emergency & disaster preparedness activities and, if so, how. Some demographics will also be captured. By exploring what roles currently exist and presenting these findings in a poster at the 2012 Annual Medical Libraries Association Conference in Seattle, WA, it is the author's hope that hospital librarians can continue their involvement in this vital area and learn from each other. Disclaimer: This survey has been exempted from Institutional Review Board oversight as the Aurora Health Care IRB has determined it does not constitute human subject research. Results will be kept confidential and presented only in aggregate.

Nosocomial Infections: Drug-resistant "Superbugs"

September 17, USA TODAY – (International) Drug-resistant ‘superbugs’ hit 35 states, spread worldwide. Bacteria that are able to survive every modern antibiotic are cropping up in many U.S. hospitals and are spreading outside the country, public health officials said. The bugs, reported by hospitals in more than 35 states, typically strike the critically ill and are fatal in 30 percent to 60 percent of cases. Israeli doctors are battling an outbreak in Tel Aviv that has been traced to a patient from northern New Jersey, said the director of infection control and epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania and president of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiologists. The bacteria are equipped with a gene that enables them to produce an enzyme that disables antibiotics. The enzyme is called Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenamase. It disables carbapenam antibiotics, last-ditch treatments for infections that don’t respond to other drugs. “We’ve lost our drug of last resort,” he said. Will a “play-or-pay” policy for health care cause job losses?

Will a “play-or-pay” policy for health care cause job losses?

by Phillip Cryan

A play‐or‐pay employer contribution policy for health care would require employers who don’t provide their workers comprehensive health insurance to pay a new payroll tax to help fund public provision of health insurance for those workers. Many of the health care reform proposals currently under discussion in Congress incorporate such a contribution — as did the campaign proposal put forward by President Barack Obama.

Health insurers refuse to limit rescission of coverage

An insurance company "is supposed to honor its commitments and stand by you in your time of need," Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said.
Lawmakers ask three executives if they'll stop dropping customers except where they can show "intentional fraud." All say no.

Public Health and "tweet" timely data

BY HUMAYUN J. CHAUDHRY
May 20, 2009

As medical residents 20 years ago, when we responded to a nurse's call that a patient was short of breath, we would engage in "elevator thoughts" - sorting out the possible reasons and planning a management strategy in the brief solitude of the hospital elevator - before rushing to the bedside.

President Obama on Health Care Reform

Dear Friend,

I recently began work as the Director of the HHS Office of Health Reform, and I wanted to share President Obama's weekly address with all of you.

This weekend the President's address focuses on the urgent need for comprehensive health reform. The President noted:
"...We know that our families, our economy, and our nation itself will not succeed in the 21st century if we continue to be held down by the weight of rapidly rising health care costs and a broken health care system."

You can watch the President's address now by visiting www.whitehouse.gov.
