“After almost 14 months spent under the cloud of Ebola, this will be joyful news for the country,” said Karin Landgren, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Liberia. “Liberians and their Government, with support from the UN and ineternational partners, have gotten firmly ahead of the epidemic. Now, all Liberians must remain vigilant.”
She pointed out that the UN Mission for Emergency Ebola Response (UNMEER) had closed its doors and transferred residual tasks to the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and to UN agencies but stressed that despite these positives, the outbreak had demonstrated the “underlying fragility” of Liberia.
“It is remarkable that eight months later, it is Liberia, among the three affected countries, that appears poised to be declared Ebola-free,” she said, making reference to Guinea and Sierra Leone. “Now is the time to address factors which conrtributed to Ebola’s spread, in particular, weak social service delivery, lack of accountability and overly centralized Government.”

DAKAR -- The U.N. envoy on Ebola on Tuesday hailed "extraordinary progress" against the outbreak in West Africa after new cases last week fell below 20 for the first time since mid-2014, but he warned it would take time to end the epidemic completely.
David Nabarro said that in the week to May 3 only nine new cases were reported in Guinea and the same number in neighboring Sierra Leone. Liberia once again had no new cases.
Nabarro said he was optimistic that Liberia would be declared Ebola-free on May 9, when it is due to reach the official World Health Organization (WHO) standard of 42 days without a new Ebola case....
"This is extraordinary progress. For those of us involved in this, we have got used to having good news one week, bad news the next, so we are not starting to celebrate yet, but we are feeling positive," Nabarro told a news conference in Dakar.
