Civil Society calls for more intervention in Health
Fri, 2016-04-29 06:56 — Mohamed SThe Coordinator, Health for all Coalition, Victor Lansana Koroma has called on Government and health partners to invest more resources in order to maintain progress in the fight against malaria.
He made this call during the commemoration of World Malaria Day, held at the Miatta Conference Hall on Monday 25th where he praised the efforts of the National Malaria Control Programme in the fight against the dreadful disease.
Mr Koroma also recognised the global efforts to reduce and end malaria, but the challenges are still visible, therefore more push is needed to end the disease.
He applauded Government and partners for producing the 2016-2020 malaria strategic plans, which he hoped will do justice to improve on gains made.
As he took the podium, the Country Coordinator Coordinating Mechanism of Global Fund in Sierra Leone, Rev. Alimamy Kargbo broke the good news of $32 million Dollar support to fight against malaria.
According to report in the 2016-2020 strategic plans, over $100,000,000 million Dollars is needed over a five year period to fight the disease, but Mr Kargbo assured the gathering that the $32 million is for two years, and as the plan progresses more financial resources will be added, especially in the areas of drugs, treated insecticide nets and capacity building.
Over the years, the Global Fund Country Coordinator maintained that funds have been provided not only for malaria, but also Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS prevention in the country.
Representing Public, Private Partnership, Mohamed Kallon from Total, Sierra Leone recalled that the environment is for mankind but over the years mankind has directly and indirectly affected the environment, causing climate change.
He noted that as a responsible company, Total has joined environmentalists to save the environment from further depletion, and to keep in line with its corporate social responsibility, the company has supported the campaign against malaria, through public education and other outreach activities to keep the environment clean.
Mr Kallon said Total wants to protect and improve the health of its employees and customers, stressing that when employees and customers are healthy, the company will continue to grow and be able to meet its corporate responsibility.
