Neighborhood and Physical Environment

The CDC’s Theme on Housing Composition is shown on the map above. It is very much about who we are in the neighborhood. Children and the elderly are regarded to make us more vulnerable as well as people who are disabled and households managed by single parents. The colored icons on this map tell you where each census tract falls on the vulnerability scale when these members of our community are counted. The darkest shade of blue represents the highest vulnerability.  The lightest shade is low vulnerability. Click on any icon to read the percentages in each category that contribute to Housing Composition vulnerability.

There is a decimal number that appears at the top of the box that appears on the left when you click on an icon. It is a decimal number between 0 and 1. The larger that number is, the higher the vulnerability is in that census tract.

If you click on the colored polygons on the map, you can read the comments made on the surveys by people who live, worship or work there.

Newtown Health Disparities and Environmental Collaborative

April 2018 – Present

About the Collaborative

The Collaborative has been holding bi-weekly meetings since April of 2018.  Members are organized into research, advocacy, health, and media task forces to make decisions on priorities in those areas and to plan for community events. Collaborative members have met with city and county officials, including Commissioners, Sarasota County Air and Water Quality, and the Sarasota County Health Department. With support from the Amaryllis Park Neighborhood Association, the collaborative has been able to share health data with Newtown community members at two Community Informational Sessions, and several other community events. One of our guiding principles is to constantly refer to community residents for guidance to hold ourselves accountable to true community needs.

Timeline of Activity

  • April 2018: Researchers notices asthma disparities for ZIP 34234 on Florida public health data tracking tools
  • May 2018: Collaborative forms after residents and researchers come together over concerns about cement dust in the air around Booker High
  • June – July 2018: Collaborative researches regulatory policies and learns from experts about similar groups in other communities, decides on research priorities
  • August 2018: Sarasota County Air & Water Quality educates on the appropriate way to report fugitive dust
  • September 2018: Community Informational Session held in partnership with Amaryllis Park Neighborhood Association and Newtown CHAT
  • November 2018: Preliminary research on options for soil and air quality testing methods
  • December 2018: Analysis of Community Questionnaire survey results, Collaborative members outreach to other community groups

It’s not safe with the overpolicing in the neighborhood and not being able to speak up [fear of being put in jail again] (Lives in E)

Noise Pollution

Newtown Nation Meeting –  March 23, 2021

The Noise pollution was next on the Agenda. Ronnique spoke. She has spoken with Ms Ahern Koch and was told, “Commissioners can’t intervene with neighborhood noise.” It turns out, however, that the commissioners can help mitigate the noise. There are health challenges. People can’t sleep due the noise and the lyrics of the music are very offensive and children should not be hearing them. Ronnique has been collecting petitions. She collected 65 of them online. Pastor Dupree is very concerned about health impacts of the noise: “If you can’t rest, you can’t fight anything off.”  Pets are scared of the noise. The active position is that residents “deserve ambient sound levels, peace and ability to sleep…”
