World Habitat Day: A Day to Recognize the Basic Need for Shelter

huffingtonpost.com - October 1st, 2012 - Jimmy Carter

In the waning hours of a January afternoon, as children played after school and parents prepared to end their work days, Haiti was suddenly shaken forever by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. Lives were lost, communities destroyed. An already-challenged country instantly faced even greater odds. Nearly three years later, some progress has been made, but the fact that -- unacceptably -- hundreds of thousands of people still live in tents and makeshift shelters should shake the world community.

Team Romania Sells Their Solar Decathlon Plus-Energy PRISPA Home

submitted by Samuel Bendett

inhabitat.com - by Tafline Laylin - September 18, 2012

Unlike most homes we've visited so far at the 2012 Solar Decathlon in Madrid, Team Romania's enchanting plus-energy PRISPA house already feels like home. The prototype has a comfortable, lived-in look and feel - no wonder it has already been sold! It's a good thing the team opted for simplicity and a modular design, because after the competition ends on 29 September, they will disassemble and reassemble the PRISPA for the third and final time.

Later this month the Madrid Solar Decathlon will welcome the only Japanese entrant, the Omotenashi House designed by students from Chiba University. The house has been designed for two people to lead a self-sufficient lifestyle, incorporating modern technology with inspiration from—and respect for—traditional Japanese architectural practices. Following the earthquake and subsequent Fukushima disaster, Japan has been looking for inspiration to create a low-carbon future.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) - Launches Flagship Publication on State of the World's Refugees

unhcr.org - May 31, 2012

NEW YORK, United States, May 31 (UNHCR) UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres warned on Thursday that factors causing mass population flight are growing and over the coming decade more people on the move will become refugees or displaced within their own country.

In comments marking the launch in New York of "The State of the World's Refugees: In Search of Solidarity," Guterres said displacement from conflict was becoming compounded by a combination of causes, including climate change, population growth, urbanization, food insecurity, water scarcity and resource competition.

All these factors are interacting with each other, increasing instability and conflict and forcing people to move. In a world that is becoming smaller and smaller, finding solutions, he said, would need determined international political will.

Introduction to the Affordability (originally Bertaud) Model - Jerry Erbach - June 2012

Introduction to the Affordability (originally Bertaud) Model
Jerry Erbach – June 2012

“Meeting the basic human need for shelter is a key component of community resilience, both in the immediate response to a disaster event, as well as long-term recovery and an eventual return to normal economic functionality. The availability of housing that is affordable is a crucial factor, underlying many other community functions, as people must have a stable place to live to be active participants in the local economy as workers or consumers, to send their children to school and to engage in civic activity.” (from “Roadmap to Enhanced Community Resilience – Availability of Housing that is Affordable” – Community and Regional Resilience Institute and City of Gulfpoint; February 2009)

Solid, Liquid, Hazardous, Bio-medical and Electronic Waste PLAS-CRETE: Manufacture of Construction Blocks with shredded PET and HDPE

http://cehi.org.lc - Karen Alleyne - June 1, 2012

ABSTRACT

This project is based on the development, testing and evaluation of lightweight aggregate
cementitious products utilizing shredded Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and High Density
Polyethylene (HDPE) from shredded plastic bottles and crates. The innovation for this project is
twofold. Firstly, thousands of PET and HDPE plastic materials, particularly plastic bottles, are
improperly disposed of each day resulting in large volumes of plastic waste entering and
remaining in the natural environment. This has become a solid waste management challenge in
Guyana since it is estimated that over 10,000 tonnes of waste plastic are discarded yearly, in
Georgetown alone. Secondly, efficient means of re-using waste plastic, particularly PET and
HDPE must be found since in developing countries it may not be economically viable based on
the volumes of plastic produced, to recycle.
